Our story begins in Esso, the village of northern Kamchatka in which most of the Evens were settled during the Soviet period. It’ll soon be summer break at the school and for a large part of the children, it’s the promise of a return to the forest, a new nomadic existence, and a reconnection with a different world.
We’ll meet two teenage girls, Vassilina and her cousin, as they prepare to travel on horseback to join their relatives in the forest. Just as we discovered the previous winter, it's a new world opening up to us. Because it is not just one family who has chosen to live in the forest, but a whole collective… and not just adults who live in complete self-sufficiency, but also children and young people who carve out a future for themselves.
Summer, a glorious period of lush vegetation and a revival of life, is the ideal time of return... Of animals, humans, and all living beings that are important to those who’ve remained and lived in the forest all winter.
A massive exodus takes place in Kamchatka, from cities to the forest. With this film, we want to tell the story of this return, and of this different world that is taking shape in the heart of the summer forest of Kamchatka.
