In 1995, Toulon became, in the words of the press, "the biggest French town to fall into the hands of the extreme right-wing". And yet the Front National won city hall with only 37% of votes cast, 20% of the electorate. But Toulon has no credible alternatives, no other projects for the future, a city at the mercy of the first adventurer passing through. To this extent, the 1995 vote can be seen as the logical denouement of a catastrophe foretold, which is to say, of more than thirty years of history.
