DRESS IN SENEGAL

Director(s): Delphine DELOGET, Stéphane CORRÉA – Writer(s): Delphine DELOGET, Stéphane CORREA   Contact Contact   Download Print page

If Senegalese women are so elegant, it’s because they want to make sure to keep their polygamous husbands close by and their most infallible weapon is known as the “petit pagne”…
For young women, jeans are the very symbol of emancipation and equality of the sexes.

But dress is not just for the living. Dress is important even beyond death. Tradition demands that new clothes are offered to the dead so that when they get to heaven, they will be elegant when appearing before God. And if you want to know what the President is going to say, you’ll be better advised to look at what he’s wearing – traditional boubou or suit – than to listen to his speech.

We’ll also meet the B-Boys in their fashionable hip-hop outfits. They are fascinated by the American dream and the promise of a better future, somewhere, a future they are going to find even at the peril of their lives…
