A Jewish wife is her husband’s property. He bought her by marriage and is the only person who can grant a divorce and decide upon its terms. He owns her.
Despite the existence of a civil law in Israel which forbids polygamy, the rabbinical law, allows a married man who refuses to divorce his wife to live with another woman and have children with her. This stands in complete opposition to the law that forbids a women who is still married - and whose husband refuses to grant her a divorce - to live with another man or bear his children. Our documentary exposes the Jewish divorce system for the first time. No separation between church and state exists in Israel; marriage or divorce are dealt with according to archaic and fundamentalist orthodox Jewish law. In her film, PURITY, Anat Zuria, the film’s creator, dealt with the violation of intimacy between married couples who follow the Jewish purification laws. In this her second film, she explores the blatant intervention of the state in Jewish family life through the powerful control of the Jewish rabinical courts of law on matrimony.
