2024 is the year the scientists of the Institut Pasteur and the CNRS (National Centre of Scientific Research) hope to be able to test on humans the very first treatment aimed at repairing one of the forms of profound deafness by "correcting" the DNA at the heart of the cells.

The development of gene therapies to restore hearing functions in deaf people could indeed accelerate very quickly, and mark a real turning point. But what is the view of the deaf think who defend a cultural specificity and a different way of existing and being in the world?
Sandrine Herman investigates to takes stock of this medical evolution and to question the societal choices it represents.
