In Algeria, the “maquis” (resistance) was organized in six regions called "Wilaya".

From 1959 onwards, electrified, mined and impenetrable dams, totally isolated them and cut them off from the arrival of any reinforcement. The French army steamrollered them for two years, from east to west across the country, to reduce and destroy these Wilaya.
