What is the difference between ceramics and glass?
Glass is reversible; it can be melted down again and reused…its surface oxidizes over time… Ceramic is the only man-made material that is eternal. It is thus the perfect vehicle to help us tell the history of human civilization.
Ceramics have been developed and gradually refined, with constant effort, all throughout the existence of human beings, for over 20 000 years. Their purpose was to respond to a “necessity” based on practical use, but the element of beauty was a powerful component. While necessity motivated the innovation of ceramics, their sheer beauty triggered a new “desire” and thus different needs no one had imagined before. This spiral creating desire and necessity thus further accelerated the innovation in ceramics...

The history of clay and fire spans thousands of years…and many successive civilisations. This film tells the unique destiny of civilization through the history of earthen ware made of clay and fire.
Set in six distinct periods, the story unfolds in six different parts of the world…

In two hours, our journey takes us from the depth of time into the future that takes place in space…Since today, industry has turned to clay constituents for use in high tech products such as photocopiers, cameras, medical implants, integrated circuits, solar panels and… space shuttle tiles.
