Walking in the gentle hills of Tuscany or in the midst of the orchards of Sicily, it’s hard to believe that Italy is a country which lives on borrowed time...
As we fly over the landscapes, we see traces of geological movements that have so often been devastating. The hills of the Tiber Valley were created by seismic shocks that can occur again at any time. The lemon groves on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius live under the threat of lava flows.

The peninsula, set on the junction of the European and African tectonic plates, lives with the permanent risk of seismic activities that regularly cause earthquakes and landslides, making it the second most volcanic country in Europe. Italy is a paradise under threat. But its greatest strength is that – each time it’s been struck by disaster - the country has learnt to draw on its resources to reinvent its way of life.
