As we fly over what used to be the "Roman Empire", we come to understand the meaning of the popular saying "All roads lead to Rome".
It states the obvious you can see from high above: roads, bridges and aqueducts weave a web that connects the capital of Italy with the rest of Europe. The Romans built their empire by structuring the territory much more than by fighting battles.

Colonization, as it was rolled out from Rome in ancient times, was primarily seen as a means to control the Mediterranean and European territories. The Romans conquered and retained power over their empire by tracing roads, digging tunnels and domesticating nature.
Their constructions were built to last and defy the centuries... Today, we admire them as the fascinating testimony of a country which was long considered the centre of the world.
