On April 19, 2016, for the first time in the United States, twelve deaf lawyers were sworn in before the Supreme Court. Among the deaf in the U.S., many have access to legal professions; there are legal advisers, magistrates and even a few judges! Deaf people even held positions in the Obama administration.

Laurent Valo from the “L’Oeil et la main” team went to Washington DC to find out to what extent the number of deaf lawyers has increased since this law came into force. From just a handful of lawyers, there today more than 200 bar members, while in Europe, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
How did they manage to improve their position to such an extent? What obstacles did they have to face?
