In the Middle Ages, the awakening of Romanesque art would herald the first European renaissance, which was accompanied by an unprecedented construction of new villages and towns in the territories of France and Germany, known at the time as the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Over the centuries, France and Germany have witnessed the horizon of their rural and urban landscape change continuously – it was gradually dominated by religious buildings which were also artistic and cultural monuments. Seen from high above, we take the full measure of the marks left by this extraordinary wave of construction...not only on the landscape but also on the people and their communities.
