The "Aéroport du Grand Ouest" is a new airport project – in planning for over 50 years! It is to be located in the small town of Notre-Dame-des-Landes near the French city of Nantes. It is intended to replace the existing, but smaller Nantes Atlantique airport. It is meant to serve as an international gateway for western France and thus boost the local economy.
From the start, the project has met with fierce opposition from the rural community since the airport would be very close to a protected nature reserve and to the city itself. With construction works due to start in 2014, protest has progressively turned into a national - even European – cause.
Positions have become polarized; it is now known as “the conflict of Notre-Dame-des-Landes”: two opposing “camps” representing two different ideas of development and economic growth, two different visions of the world and the future.
The film highlights the economic, social, environmental and political issues and puts them into perspective with concerns for (a better) future.
ONLY THE FRENCH VERSION IS AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING.
