Synopsis:
Serge Brunier, globe-trotting photographer and amateur astronomer, arrives under the star-studded sky of Chile’s Atacama Desert. In this stunning location, he wants to make his dream come true... producing the biggest photograph every taken of the entire sky! We'll follow him as he works on an exclusive 800 million pixel image that reveals the Milky Way in all its splendour.
His ambitious work spans the heavens through 360°, from North to South Pole, and is composed of a mosaic of 1,200 individual photos which he has taken over the course of an entire month. While shooting his many clichés, Serge takes us to the grandest astronomical observation sites in Chile - from the VLT telescopes to the giant ALMA antennas in the Andes Cordillera. We conclude the adventure at the top of the Pic du Midi in the Pyrenees, the mountain range between France and Spain.
As the film unfolds, Serge takes us on a cosmic journey through time and space, plunging into the depths of the celestial sphere where we discover nebulae, stars, planets and distant galaxies.
Through Serge’s lens, the spectator comes face to face with the sheer immensity of the sky and will experience and enjoy the vision that astronomers have when training their powerful telescopes on distant points in the universe in their quest for new discoveries.
This film has been coproduced with RSA COSMOS and was made possible thanks to the support of the P.L.U.S. of the city of Dunkerque and the Cité des sciences, Paris.
Serge Brunier and Bruno Bucher have also completed a new 30-part televison series taking the viewer on a variety of journeys BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH, visiting the high places of astronomy around the world.
