No army in the world gives deaf people the right to take arms.
In Libya, the deaf have forged their destiny, though…
In February 2011, a civil uprising took place in Libya. In just a few months, the whole country was in turmoil, with open warfare between the “rebels” and the “pro-Gaddafists”.
During the nine months of war, a rather extraordinary group fought alongside the rebels: the “Deaf-Mute Brigade”. One year after the beginning of the Libyan Revolution, Daniel Abbou – host of the French weekly programme for the deaf “L’Oeil et la main” (Eyes and Hands) - visited the town of Misrata to meet these deaf soldiers who have taken arms to change their own destiny as “handicapped” civilians and who have taken an active part in the historic changes that have redefined their country.
