DRESS IN IRAQI KURDISTAN

Director(s): Fulvia ALBERTI – Writer(s): Fulvia ALBERTI   Contact Contact   Download Print page

This episode takes us to Iraqi Kurdistan where we discover that the belt that ties the djeli kurdi, the traditional Kurdish dress, indicates the marital status of the person wearing it.
And we discover a variety of other unusual dress-related information. For example, the famous espadrilles canvas shoes are made here from recycled clothing. Or the custom that demands that a young married couple hide their hats under the pillow.
We meet a true local fashion connaisseur, the designer Bahar Ismail, who specialises in all sorts of outfits – from the most patriotic to the most unrestrained. And we go to the mountains to meet the Yezidis and their immaculate white dress, symbol of light and purity.
