RKO was one of the ‘Big Five’ mythical studios of Hollywood’s Golden Age, from 1928 to its demise in 1956 - largely due to the mismanagement by its last CEO, Howard Hughes.
During its short existence though, RKO produced some 550 films including some of cinema’s great masterpieces, among them King Kong, Citizen Kane, the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies, etc. (the film contains many extracts) and RKO launched the career of famous stars such as Katherine Hepburn and Robert Mitchum.
The studio's history is closely linked to the historical context of America at the time: the financial crisis of the 1930’s, the run-up to WWII, the anti-communist witch hunt. All of these events have left their mark on the arts and the movie industry at large...
