A young lieutenant of the Infantry bitterly asked himself « Why have we been ordered to beat retreat? » as he shuffled along the long line of French prisoners en route to a detention camp in Germany... « Why have we left home? » wondered all the Belgians, people from the North and Paris who’d been thrown onto the roads of the Exodus one 10th May 1940.

The fate of desperate civilians and of French soldiers who try to comprehend the reasons for this total collapse and for the defeat of May – June 1940, known as « The Fall of France ». Where were the commanders, who had given the orders?
