ON THE KALAUPAPA TRAIL

The island of Molokai in the Hawaian archipelago. 70 year-old Buzzy Sproat, a descendant of a long line of traditional paniolos –takes groups of tourists down the Kalaupapa track on the back of his mules. This spectacular winding path along the side of the highest maritime cliffs in the world leads to the Kalaupapa peninsular, which has been a leper colony for over a century.

In 1873, a Belgian missionary, Father Damien, arrived to dedicate himself entirely to the well-being of the sick. He would succumb to leprosy himself and has been canonised on Oct. 11, 2009 by Pope Benedict.
