In May 1967, in the southern part of Nigeria, the Ibos proclaimed independence and named their province « Biafra ». In an immediate response, the Nigerian government set up a blockade. It was the start of a civil war which was to last for two and half years and cost the lives of one million people. The war received unprecedented coverage in the worldwide media.

Throughout the conflict, Biafra received secret military aide from France. As for the volunteers of the humanitarian help organisations, on their return from Biafra, they set up “Médecins sans Fontières”, the ‘French doctors’.
