JUVENILE DELINQUENCY: THE JOB OF A CASE WORKER

Director(s): Carine LEFEBVRE-QUENNELL – Writer(s): Carine LEFEBVRE-QUENNELL   Contact Contact   Download Print page

Looking after young delinquents is a skill one needs to learn. For 2 years, Yoann, Seb and Alice will be studying to become 'educateurs' - case workers for the Youth Justice Department, enforcing rulings made by the court.
They discover that lookikng after troubled teenagers often means facing violence and suffering on a daily basis. It also demands questioning their own positions, learning how to maintain the right distance and perspective although they are only a few years older than the young people in their care.
The results are often hard to assess but are none the less very real. At a time, when society demands harsher penalties and more imprisonment , when different kinds of juvenile prisons are being opened across the country, the three 'educateurs' have chosen to believe that the answer is education rather, than punishment.
