Niger, second poorest country in the world, has known for several years now a situation of famine during the period known as “soudure” – the lean season between the end of food stocks and the new harvest. This particular food crisis mainly threatens children of under two years.

The phenomena has been particularly menacing in 2005, but will most likely continue for years to come. The investigation brings to light that this food imbalance is by no means an unavoidable fate. It reflects an endemic state of poverty from which the country seems unable to recover or find a way out by itself…
