SUDAN / DARFUR: THE SILENT GENOCIDE

On January 9, 2005, the Sudanese government and the rebel group called Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) signed a comprehensive peace agreement to end 21 years of civil war in southern Sudan. In a certain sense, this peace agreement has re-activated the civil war by “moving” it to the western Sudanese region of Darfur, ever since the uprising of the black African Muslims in February, 2003.

We follow General Jean Bosco Kazura of the Rwandan army who is in charge of the peace-keeping force of the African Union in Darfur. He brings us “close” to the conflict by introducing us to the governor of the region as well as to one of the principal pro-government Arab militia chiefs who is determined to keep up the pressure to make non-Muslims leave the area.
According to the United Nations, as of today, an estimated 70,000 civilians have been killed and 2 million people have fled from their country.
