On May 25, 1954, Robert Capa died in Indochina. Icon of a whole generation of photo journalists, he embodied the very spirit of adventure: a romantic hero, a legendary photographer with a tragic end.
The film takes its departure with the photo that “made” Capa: the Spanish Republican fallling mortally wounded in front of his camera. The question of the photo’s authenticity is the ‘knot’ of this story. This shot came to be regarded as Capa’s guiding principle of his job: the closer you get to the action, the better the photo and its impact!
This is – above all – a film on the man, a film on Endre Friedmann, born in Hungary in 1913, who re-invented himself Robert Capa, an American photographer in Paris – with the help of his girlfriend and fellow photographer, Gerda Taro.
He covered five wars and lived life to the full. Thanks to exceptional archive material, including rare shots of Capa at work, the viewer has the impression that he stands next to Capa and sees what HE saw through his lense.
