MONGOLIA: DANCES WITH THE MARMOTS

Director(s): Patrick BOITET – Writer(s): Patrick BOITET   Contact Contact   Download Print page

Tséhing Balder is a master, the last of all the animal trainers of the region of Töv Aimak to use hypnosis. His hunting skill is based on an amazing knowledge of the marmots and their behaviour. He performs a dance that rouses the curiosity of the animals. As soon as they raise themselves up to see what is happening, he aims and fires. Tséhing Balder's family lives on the marmot trade : its fur, the meat and the grease that is used as medication. The family travels along the Mongol steppes all year, as the marmot's hunting season is restricted to August and September.
