ETHIOPIA: THE BLACK GOLD OF THE BORANAS

Director(s): Frederic TONOLLI – Writer(s): Frédéric TONOLLI   Contact Contact   Download Print page

On the maps, this scorched earth is known as the Badlands, but the Boranas have another name for it : « the singing earth ». The Boranas venerate their herds and their overriding concern in this arid landscape is finding water for their precious cattle. Over the centuries, the burning plains have become pitted with dozens of wells dug far into the bowels of the earth. A human chain is formed to fetch the water up to the surface. The Boranas sing to lend rhythm to their labour. Passing close by any of these wells, it is as if the earth is singing.
