GATEWAYS TO AFRICA

Director(s): Joel CALMETTES   Contact Contact   Download Print page

The image of Africa is generally portrayed by one of two totally opposed views: we either see a continent in a state of permanent war, suffering from famine and epidemics; or we’re shown pictures of paradise lost where a sort of ancestral wisdom preserves mankind from the pitfalls of modern civilisation.
This stereotype image of the continent has a long history. In fact, in can already by found in the travel literature of the early 19th century! But Africa is infinitely richer, more dynamic and far more complex.
It is precisely this ‘continent in motion’, its mix of race and culture that we’ll explore in the series “Gateways to Africa” – each episode goes beyond the clichés and simplistic views in search of the true colours of Africa. And what place could be more colourful and dynamic than harbours and seaports?! They are not only gateways to the outside world and its progress, but they also provide access to the continent’s historic and cultural wealth.
The ports of Africa are a symbol of its past, its dreams and its future…
