You just cannot miss them… every tourist arriving at the heart of old Havanna is fated to meet them. They are eight – not one more - to hold an official licence to carry out their profession. Eight happy fellows carrying on – against all odds - a time-honoured Cuban tradition that dates back to the dawn of photography. They show off their most precious possession at the foot of Capitol Hill: an ancient camera (over 100 years old!), with its tripod and a dark room – the “ancestor of the Polaroid”. They charge one dollar per photo and despite shortage of paper and chemicals, they earn in one day the salary of a Cuban doctor. A portrait of Cuba’s latest “nouveaux riches”…
