The Bay of Aboukir, Egypt, in the summer of 1998. Franck Goddio and his team are about to explore the wreck of the “Orient”, a ship that sunk 200 years ago. The “Orient”, flagship of the French fleet, was on its way to conquer Egypt, carrying with it Napoleon’s imperial dreams for domination of the seas. But tragedy strikes in August 1798 at Aboukir, a bay 15 miles north of Alexandria, when France and England – two of the most powerful rival nations of the time – faced each other in a decisive naval battle, the outcome of which was to change history. Goddio wants to find out how Napoleon could have been defeated and how a vessel such as the “Orient”, jewel of the French fleet, could have been sunk by Admiral Nelson’s fleet during one of the bloodiest battles in naval history.
