Thirty years after Algerian independence from French colonial rule, the film looks at the dramatic and extraordinary events during the advent of independence, the period of July to September 1962.

An overwhelming majority of Algerians had voted for a separation from France during the referendum organised on 3rd July ’62. It was the beginning of a traumatic period of unrest and upheaval, but it did not end the war that had started seven years earlier.
During three months in the summer of ’62, heady independence festivities happened alongside kidnappings of Europeans. On the one hand, Algerians rejoicing in their newly found freedom, on the other, the sorrow of exile for those that are called « pieds noirs » (Europeans born in Algeria).
There was fear of a continued war, but this time, a war between Algerians. And the country began to witness the terrible massacres of the harkis…
