In Venezuela, in the late 70’s, a small but influential group of musical thinkers started a programme known as “El Sistema”, The System, part social programme, part rigorous music training which later adopted the motto “Music for Social Change”. It promoted human opportunity and development to impoverished children.
“The Children of Las Brisas” looks at “El Sistema” from the children’s perspective, following the lives of a group of poverty-stricken children over a period of six years as they strive to become classical musicians in a country that is falling apart... Venezuela is bankrupt with a high murder rate, chronic shortages of food and life’s necessities, corruption in all sectors and political turmoil. In this particular context, their musical ambition becomes a near epic endeavour.
To the backdrop of an impending audition in Caracas, that might well determine their future, the film follows the daily struggles of the children and their families, their commitment and passion as well as their personal sorrows.
