“The Valley” is the “Roya Valley” between Italy and France – an area which has belonged to one or the other country in the last centuries. Now that many “land migrant routes” to the heart of Europe are closed to them, many converge to this area to “cross over”…. Desperate people in search of a better life or fleeing wars that are sometimes the result of our own governments’ policies.
The law says, we are required to assist any person in danger…but these days, that seems to imply any documented person in danger – anything else is punishable by law.
A group of valley people, faced with the refugees’ dismay and suffering, simply gave them food, a place to rest… But their human gesture put them at risk; it was against the law. So, they decided to make their actions public, for their own protection. But it attracted the attention of the police and the media and ended up making things more dangerous for the refugees. The situation made a profound impact on the daily life of the valley people… on their families and their work.
Character-driven film focusing on the personal stories of ordinary men and women who, caught in an impossible and legally complex situation, struggle to keep a sense of their own personal ethics to do what is right….
The story of the Roya Valley is a story that stands for hundreds of people across Europe, who simply act in the name of solidarity.
