MUSLIMS IN EUROPE

These are questions that have dominated the public debate in Europe following the terror attacks, the flow of refugees arriving in Europe or Brexit. But how do Muslims see their life in Europe? How do they reconcile their faith and culture with a secular European society?
The film will be joining Muslims in Europe, from all walks of life, for Ramadan, the most important period of the year for them and a challenging time when their “double identity” as Muslims and European citizens is most exposed...
What do we really know about Muslims and their religion that would allow us to think their religious beliefs are a threat to European culture? Why should Muslims in Europe not be able to live openly their multiple social identities pertaining to religion, profession, nationality or gender – just as the rest of the European population?
And why would they not be able to contribute to the construction and progress of Europe?
We will be following Muslims of different backgrounds, in five or more European countries, during the Ramadan period - both in their family and social environment as well as at work or community activities. Thus, the film aims to give a different view on Muslims in Europe and, at the same time, a fresh perspective of Europe as seen through their eyes, giving us the viewpoint of Muslims who also feel European... which will give us a better understanding of how they deal with the challenge of reconciling their Muslim faith, their culture and traditions with the realities of an open society based on humanitarian values.
By reversing these points of view, the film will tell us as much about Muslims as it does about Europe. And we might well discover that the crisis with Muslims might be more of crisis with Europe.
