Ebizo Ichikawa XI is a modern-day Kabuki superstar, a famous TV and film actor and heir to a prestigious family of kabuki actors.
The art of Kabuki dates back to the ‘Edo’ era in the 17th century. It has become the synonym for Japanese culture and traditional art. Through generations, the Ichikawa family has passed down its artistry and thrived as one of the most prestigious household names in Kabuki.
Born in 1977 as the noble son of Danjuro XII, Ebizo was raised to carry on the family name, but his tumultuous life has been marked by generational conflicts and he rebelled at being trapped between the past and the future.
EBIZO: THE MAN OF FICTION offers a rare insight into the life of a modern-day legend: his adolescence marked by resistance toward the world of kabuki, his tumultuous relationship with his father, a fateful TV appearance where he met his future wife, a violent scandal that shocked Japan and his decision to accept his responsibilities as the future leader of kabuki….
This is the story of a family bound by tradition and the very essence of Japanese culture, where preserving heritage and lineage is considered to be a virtue.
