Forgotten by time, Ethiopia’s Tigre region – a harsh, arid land in the mountains - is the only part of the country untouched by invasion or external control throughout the centuries. High up, inaccessible and hidden from the world, the monastery of Debre Damo, is home to the oldest Coptic community in Ethiopia, since 1500. Only a hundred monks remain, following time-old rules of life in poverty, work and prayer.
